Just look at the repeated failure of the dollar coin to catch on.

It's worked fine in Canada.

MODU,

I'm pretty sure, though, that the business getting that money wouldn't mind. And I'm pretty sure it'd happen to everyone's business. So wouldn't it just cycle through (slightly higher prices, slightly higher wages)?

Anyway, my suggestion wouldn't change the effective price to 75 cents, it'd change to 7 or 8 cents (70 or 80 old cents). The penny, would still exist--it'd just be 10 times rarer, like everything else.

It's true that you could just use different terminology, like 1 mark = 10 dollars, but the $ is tradition.

I'm also for making coins out of silver again, and pennies out of aged copper.

No, it still wouldn't work since you would throw of interest and taxes and everything else.  Instead of focusing on getting rid of the penny, you should focus on getting rid of currency as it is today.  More and more places are accepting debit and credit cards.  Even vending machines accept plastic.  No more searching your pocket for change.  Just whip out the plastic and swipe.  It would take probably 10 years for the entire nation to transition, but that would be my recommendation.  That way, no one is being cheated out of their pennies.

There will always be a need for hard cash. I don't like the idea of using a credit card to make every transaction possible (especially if that means giving your CC number to the guy you lost a bet with).

Credit cards are going to become more and more important, but I sure hope they don't become the standard. Call me paranoid, but I have a really bad feeling about it. Tongue

That's why you have a debit/cash card . . . separate from your credit card.  Kinda like the American Express travelers card they have now, or your Check Cards.  HArd currency is going to be history.

I prefer it when there's only one kind of currency. Get rid of the dollar - turn the dollar bill into a One-Hundred-Cents bill! Smiley

Canada also dropped the dollar bill at the same time and introduced a dollar coin that couldn't be easily confused for the quarter.  The company that makes the paper for the dollar bill is very well connected politically.

Hard currency is going to be history.

"... no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or name of the beast, or the number of his name, and his number is 666" ~ Revelation 13:17-18

Given that quote, I think it is safe to say that tangible money is not going to be done away with in the US anytime in the forseeable future.  Whatever the merits of such a scheme (and I don't think the merits exist just yet) anyone who proposes making the US a cashless society is going to be soundly thumped by the religious right.

hahaha . . . nice attempt of pulling a Shira, Ernest.  Smiley  However, it is inevitable that we will switch away from cash.  There is too much of a convenience of going EFT that the economy will push the nation in that direction.

Well, none of my credit card numbers are 666, so I guess I'm safe

But how do I buy stuff, then?

Philip tends to have a habit of starting threads in the Election sections that have nothing to do with the Election. When Dave notices them, he moves them...I would imagine he's getting kinda annoyed by now though.

There's a very simple solution to this, and that's to give me my own forum to post threads in.

Since my threads are the interesting ones anyway, it'll save people some time as well.

Sounds like the GOP equiv of democraticunderground.org (i.e. the people who were posting stuff like "Rot in hell, bastard" when Reagan died). I'll pass.
