Is it just me...or is anybody else surprised that the margin of victory in the popular vote isn't higher?

I mean...I know that southern and appalachia states voted incredibly against Obama...but I would think that California, Illinois, New York and much of New England would provide a popular vote blowout.

At the moment I have 26 states tallied where all precincts have been counted. The popular vote tally at the moment is:

Obama 21,259,028 (47.98%)
McCain 22,466,260 (50.70%)
