Christie is bound to be an incredibly unpopular governor, I'd imagine.

I doubt he could do worse than Corzine Tongue

I was right in predicting Daggett would bleed lots of votes to Christie on election day Grin

The bright spot here for Democrats is that they surprisingly appear to have lost just one Assembly seat.

Indeed.  They held up well there, mostly by outspending the Republicans.  They won't be able to do that come 2011.

With Christie as governor, who will likely be unpopular by then?  I think not.

I said Democrats won't be able to massively outspend the Republicans.  That holds true whether or nor Christie is popular.

And thats the only seat that they picked up.  They didnt even pick up the fairly Republican first district, which almost everyone had expected to go GOP.

Well, one thing's for sure - IVR polls nailed it.  College polls, well...

Not that we didn't already know this.

I said to watch Middlesex County... well.  Wow.

DEM - JON S. CORZINE 83,124 44.40%
REP - CHRIS CHRISTIE 90,048 48.10%
IND - CHRISTOPHER J. DAGGETT 12,035 6.43%

Christie won MIDDLESEX.  I'm stunned.  Even though Corzine only got 67% of the primary vote there... wow.

In countywide races,

Republicans picked up both Freeholder seats up for election in Bergen,
Republicans picked up control of the Monmouth County Board of Freeholders,
Republicans picked up one Freeholder seat in Cumberland (the open one),
and most surprisingly:
Republicans picked up ALL THREE Freeholder seats in Passaic up for election
AND
Republicans defeated the incumbent County Clerk in Passaic.  That was so off the radar that I don't even know the candidates names.

2001 in NJ and VA was glorious for Democrats. It's not revelant for the national stage.

Yet, it was your nighs, congratulations.

Now that the smoke has cleared, it appears that Christie did way, way better than his "target" in the most Republican counties in the state, especially the most populous ones of Monmouth and Morris, which Christie won by 31 each, and Ocean, where Christie won by 37.  And Hunterdon, an exurban county which had trended away from Republicans a little bit in 2006 and 2008, went for Christie by 41 points.

Somerset, a county that is definitely trending Democrat (it voted for Obama in 2008) went for Christie by 22.

Corzine did terrible in the lean Democratic counties, except for Mercer.  Blame the latter on the state employee unions.  Absolutely miserable margins in Union and Middlesex—which Christie actually won.  (I'm still trying to get over that.)  He did well enough percentage wise in the cities, but the raw vote totals just weren't there.  PolitickerNJ notes that Christie's margins in Monmouth and Ocean outpaced Corzine's in Hudson and Essex.  Nice.

Christie actually lost Bergen, but still won statewide.  It's an interesting testament to the changing map.  (Or a testament to the pull of Loretta Weinberg, at least in her district.)

PS: Nothing more than a side note, but the only person I knew who was going to vote for Daggett switched out to Corzine at the last minute.  Daggett had some of his worst showings in counties that Corzine won.

AMAZING

I am still in shock, and actually almost broke down in tears at the victory party.  This is truly an amazing night for New Jersey.  They gave out little New Jersey flags, and for the first time in my life, I was proud to raise that flag up knowing that my state had juts done something amazing.

As Meeker pointed out back yonder, my assembly candidates did not win, but I sort of expected this, they benefitted heavily from my town voting for them 60%+ in 2007 when we ousted our mayor 70-30.  I knew this would not happen again and we didn't gain the ground elsewhere we thought we might.

But, in a huge shock, we won not one, but both BERGEN COUNTY FREEHOLDER SEATS!!

I was worried about this race, but I'm glad Christie pulled it off. He'll be an enormous asset to NJ!

^^^^

I was actually predicting a Jon Corzine victory.

GREAT....Now republicans will be bragging about winning both Governor races

Hahaha!  Yes.  Like weve had to listen to democRAT bragging since the messiah won.

But this is just the start.  last night's perfect sweep means a HUGE TIDE of GOP wins can be expected in 2010 and 2o12.

Look for a 1994 style GOP take over of teh house and sen, many govs and more statehouses.

People are rejecting marxism once and for all.  obama will have to go back to dealing crack.  Oh excuse me...sorry..."community organizing."

Perfect sweep, eh? NY-23? CA-10? How do those races fit into the sweep?

I am shocked that Bergen county did not vote for Christie.  It is always more Republican than the state average.

Actually, I don't think it is.  More amazingly, we voted for the Republican freeholders.  BOTH OF THEM
