As much as I'm not happy to see the gashes Christie is inflicting in our impressive state-provided services, especially education, I can definitely respect the fact that he seems willing to be hated for the cause he stands for.  Conviction is a major improvement on the average New Jersey political personality.  And he's doing something that will definitely move us in a direction we need to go in.  Our last slew of Governors were too concerned with themselves to bite the bullet and do what we all hate to admit needed to be done.  I look forward to hearing what the legislature has to offer in place of the cuts Christie made.  They have both expressed their interest and I'm hopeful there really is another realistic solution.

State aid cuts, threat of N.J. property tax hikes send Christie's popularity plummeting

As he himself predicted, Gov. Chris Christie's proposed budget with its $1.4 billion reduction in municipal, school and college aid and resulting $250 average property tax hike, has not won him many friends, according to a new Rutgers-Eagleton Poll.

The result: A 12-point drop in popularity from 45 percent of New Jerseyans in February to 33 percent following his March 16 budget address.

During the same period, unfavorable impressions rose from 26 percent to 37 percent.

The 12-point drop in one month comes on the heels of a budget proposal that displeases 50 percent of New Jersey residents while pleasing 43 percent.

Even so, Christie is seen much more favorably than either party in state government, where only 26 percent view Democrats and 25 percent see Republicans favorably.

"Three weeks after the budget speech, the impact is starting to sink in," said David Redlawsk, director of the poll and professor of political science at Rutgers. "The results are recognition that the proposed budget cuts are going to hurt and a significant decrease in favorable impressions of Christie."

The poll was conducted from March 31 to Saturday and included 953 New Jersey adults.

Christie is viewed significantly less favorably now than he was when the poll surveyed New Jerseyans in late February, when Christie received a 45 percent favorable to 26 percent unfavorable.

The new poll has him upside down, with 33 percent favorable and 37 percent unfavorable, a swing of 23 percentage points.

Rutgers-Eagleton polls have about as much value as a sheet of toilet paper, but still, the numbers sound much more realistic than most. After 16 years of fiscally irresponsible governance, New Jersey is no longer a state that can be run effectively while still maintaining popularity.

(And yes, it pains me to mention above that Florio had some semblance of fiscal responsibility.)

"But, but, he wants to tax your toilet paper!"

Florio-hating is so stupid.

Uh-Oh:

NEW JERSEY (WABC) -- New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has been in office for just three months, and a new eyewitness news poll shows voters are not giving him any kind of a honeymoon as he presses for budget cuts.

Only 33% of New Jersey residents approve the job Christie is doing as governor.

Nearly twice the number, 63% disapprove.

The telephone poll by SurveyUSA has a margin of error of plus or minus 4%.

Rasmussen had him at 53% just a few days earlier.

Since this is the catch-all New Jersey thread, I guess I'll post this here. Both polls were released today.

Rasmussen
51% approve, 45% disapprove

Quinnipiac
44% approve, 43% disapprove

The two are fairly consistent with each other. Not sure what was up with the SurveyUSA one that hit a month-and-a-half ago ...

Quinnipiac Poll

Christie Approval: 51/36

Obama Approval: 47/47

Christie is more popular than Obama in New Jersey!

So that means Christie wins re-election with 57% of the vote!*

*This model applies only to incumbents, who have plenty of advantages unless they are demonstrable failures.

A black eye for Christie's administration... his state lost $400 million in Race to the Top funds for schools because his education commissioner (Bret Schundler) didn't complete the form correctly and didn't have the information needed when asked.

Not good to fumble the ball when you're already making the case for tightening school budgets.

Here's a clearer version of the timeline.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/08/27/politics/main6811118.shtml

Christie blames Obama administration, states version of events, video released showing that Christie's version of events was based on Schundler lying to him to cover his ass, Christie looks foolish and sacks Schundler, NJ still out $400 million.

Bret Schundler got a job in the Christie administration? Is he trying to fail or what?

Yeah, but I don't see what being a bad candidate has to do with anything.

According to Ras, 49% blame Schundler for the screw up; 33% blame Christie.
