The hearing is called to order.

Senators are encouraged to debate the qualities of the nominee and ask him questions.

Ebowed I'll be the first to ask you, what exactly are your hopes and plans in the position of GM?

Ebowed went wild as Prez for a day or two didn't he?  He might be just the man for the job. Tongue

Considering I look to Ebowed as one of the senators that made up THE greatest senate in Atlasia history, I will proudly be voting Aye on this

What, exactly, do you intend to do in this position? What, exactly do you intend to do with this position? How active will you be? How active do you think you'll have to be to not be ignored? How much do you know about economics? How much do you know about diplomacy and about Atlasian relations with other countries? Do you expect people to recognise your authority? What will you do if they don't?

I may have more questions later, but these will do for now.

I was thinking about how to write something like that, except more concise and more tactfully, Al. Tongue

I have no qualms with the nominee as a person. I'm just not at all sure he knows what he's getting into. And he's... er... not exactly tried to be active as Vice President, either.

I'd like to echo the comments of some of my fellow Senators. My main question at this point is exactly what are your plans of intention as GM? What exactly do you plan to do?

To breathe some life into this game by making sure that we have actual events for our government to react to.  We've been on autopilot for quite a while now, either tackling ideological issues or responding to the actions of individual members.

What, exactly, do you intend to do in this position?

Write the news.

What, exactly do you intend to do with this position?

Launch a newspaper, write articles and stir things around.  For the most part, I do not plan on basing events off of what is happening in the real world.

More importantly, this is a non-ideological position, so I do not intend for my newspaper to be consistently favorable to any particular political persuasion.

I would hope to publish three to four editions of my newspaper a week.

How active do you think you'll have to be to not be ignored?

That's not up to me.

How much do you know about economics?

A lot more than I knew before I was last active in fantasy politics, but I will admit that this is my weak point and I can't promise perfection when it comes to stories dealing with economics.

How much do you know about diplomacy and about Atlasian relations with other countries?

Candid answer: How much does anyone know about Atlasian relations with other countries?  When was the last time that international relations were a consistently integral part of the government's output?  Having a Secretary of External Affairs does little to help things in this regard when the position is rarely used to its full potential.  So hopefully I can give you guys something to respond to.

Stock answer: I am responsible for the normalization of Atlasian relations with Cuba, and I remember the free trade obsession of '06 all too well.  I have a pretty decent knowledge of our statute and will, of course, take our laws regarding international relations into account when writing about international news.

Do you expect people to recognise your authority? What will you do if they don't?

Well, I'd assume my newspaper would be stickied, and I am sure that enough people serving in our government will be paying attention.

As per GM tradition I would also create a separate thread for comments from citizens.

If no one recognizes my authority I'll just stop bothering with it and go back to doing what normal people do (e.g., not this).

Everybody knows everything there is to know - that there aren't any.

Never.

Where was a time when mad spewings of hate and wishful thinking on the issue of international relations were a consistently integral part of the GM office's output, though, which explains a lot of my scepticism about bringing the office back in its present form. (And no, I understand that you don't stand for a repeat of that. Smiley )

President Jesus is already proving himself to be a man concerned with bringing fun back to the game. I strongly approve of this selection.

I was thinking primarily, though not necessarily exclusively, of the John Ford term. The statement was not intended as entirely fair and balanced.

The vote is on the nominee. Please vote aye, nay or abstain.

Abstain for now.

Ach, why am I so forgetful at the moment. Anyway. Abstain; I'm not going to vote against the nominee, but I'm not going to give a vote of confidence (not yet) in the system.
