My guess is whites voting nearly unanimously for McCain, and blacks having significantly less turnout than whites.

It was actually a small DEM-swing.

Yep, what are blacks% of VAP or RV in this parish?  Probably mimics the Prez numbers exactly, like most of Louisiana did this election.  Welcome to the black belt.

One word explains it all. "Angola."

That's 1/3 of the county's population.

To add to this picture of depression... back in 1972 this was actually one of the few places in the Deep South to vote for McGovern. That might not sound so depressing for most people here. The reason for that might though... that charming Nazi, Schmitz, polled something like 11% in West Feliciana, splitting the white vote.

Also interesting that East Feliciana is black 45%, McCain 54.6%, so it appears not to be an isolated case. Ronnie's guess sounds right.

I noticed in a different thread that West Feliciana was actually McGovern's best parish in LA in 1972.

Actually it wasn't; that was East Carroll. West Feliciana was fifth, but the only one he won.

33% of registered voters are African-American.

Once again, Angola.

The tract with Angola has around 5K people, with 3K of them being African-American.

The tract is not entirely Angola, but when you take out that tract, the West Feliciana African-American population drops.

3-2, 3-3, 5-2, 5-3, 7-2 and 7-4 are all majority African-American in registration

Obama won

3-2 (408 reg, 255 AA): 185-70
3-3 (628 reg. 511 AA): 346-41
5-2 (644 reg, 354 AA): 247-144
5-3 (286 reg, 196 AA): 124-31
7-2 (558 reg, 386 AA): 279-80
7-4 (83 reg, 61 AA): 39-5

Obama lost every other precinct except 5-1, which was a 37-37 tie (139 voters in 5-1, 76 white, 63 black)

Oh, d'oh, I just was coming here to say I'd remembered that prisons would be counted on the Census.  Thanks.
