Why not the more conservative of the two Maine twins?

No.

If anything, she's more so liberal than her fellow compatriot Susan Collins, serving alongside her as part of Maine's current Senatorial delegation. No moderate of her calibre will ever be nominated by the Republican Party during their current climate. End of story.

We just had a nominee who was a moderate.

true, but I doubt McCain would have been nominated under normal circumstances. He primarily got lucky that he had Huckabee/Romney/Thompson to spilt the conservative vote in the early states, eventually giving him an unbeatable boost.

The conservative anti-McCain vote couldn't beat McCain because they couldn't rally around a single candidate, because Huckabee and Romney were both so awful.

McCain, ironically, was probably the best choice for conservatives, through no fault of his own.

Then he sold his soul.Sad

John McCain was, at the very least, center right. He is not a moderate.

I would vote for her in an instant, but she is a horrible speech writer, and delivers almost as terribly as Bush.  She is popular among Dems (especially the moderate ones), but the south would be absolutely demoralized with the pick, and there would be record low turnout among the base.

Overall, I think it would be a wash, and it's not really worth the risk, especially if she would lose.

Hahaha, only in America.

But seriously, though McCain is an extreme rightist, he is moderate in the sense that he is somewhere in the middle of the GOP.  And, he lost.

But as for Olympia Snowe, she's going nowhere, least of all up.

Basically, what these two have said. Or to rephrase:

Not in the same sense of the word.

McCain was, for a brief period before his first run for President, juuuuust to the right of center.

Sure, he's not a moderate now, but he was.

Olympia Snowe would be an acceptable President, but the Republicans would never nominate a non-fundamentalist nutjob idiot christian anti-abortion person.

I'm afraid you're right.  Snowe is one of the few republicans I have respect for.  Just watch them nominate someone like DeMint instead.

The sad thing is she's not moderate at all. She joined all of the other Senate Republicans in whining about how Democrats should be bipartisan.  "Bipartisan"  seems to be code for Democrats should do whatever Republicans want them to do.

Congratulations for not only utterly failing to understand the difference between 'moderate' and 'partisan', but also failing to recognize that Snowe is indeed very much a moderate.  CQ.com says she's the least loyal to the Republican party line, at only 59% voting concordance.  Therefore, as one of the most bipartisan-in-terms-of-voting-record senators, I don't think it's too much for her to ask the same of her colleagues.

Oh God... I'm debating with jfern...

That survey also found that Lieberman voted 80% of the time in 2008, compared to just 64% of the time for Evan Bayh.  Interesting.

Indeed it is.  Few people seem to look past Lieberman's unabashed attention whoring to notice that he is as loyal as or more loyal than sixteen Democratic senators.  That's about a third of them.

The key here is to note that she is a moderate for a Republican

Exactly.  Throught Bush's tenure, Lieberman voted with him 59% of time; by comparison, 3 other Democrats voted with him more: Nelson (NE), Landrieu, and Lincoln.  He voted with the Democrats 88% of time; 14 Democrats had lower scores: Nelson (NE), Baucus, Landrieu, Lincoln, Bayh, Pryor, McCaskill, Carper, Conrad, Tester, Byrd, Johnson, Nelson (FL), and Salazar.

I bolded the most important part.
