We just had a nominee who was a moderate.

Hahaha, only in America.

But seriously, though McCain is an extreme rightist, he is moderate in the sense that he is somewhere in the middle of the GOP. 

John McCain was, at the very least, center right. He is not a moderate.

Basically, what these two have said. Or to rephrase:

We just had a nominee who was a moderate.

Not in the same sense of the word.
