If anything, she's more so liberal than her fellow compatriot Susan Collins, serving alongside her as part of Maine's current Senatorial delegation. No moderate of her calibre will ever be nominated by the Republican Party during their current climate. End of story.

true, but I doubt McCain would have been nominated under normal circumstances. He primarily got lucky that he had Huckabee/Romney/Thompson to spilt the conservative vote in the early states, eventually giving him an unbeatable boost.
The conservative anti-McCain vote couldn't beat McCain because they couldn't rally around a single candidate, because Huckabee and Romney were both so awful.
McCain, ironically, was probably the best choice for conservatives, through no fault of his own.
