http://voices.washingtonpost.com/thefix/2008/11/the_friday_line_ten_republican.html

Thankfully, he was smart enough to leave Palin and Huckabee off the list.

1.  Bobby Jindal
2.  John Thune
3.  Mitt Romney
4.  Mitch Daniels
5.  Bob McDonnell (running for Gov. in VA)
6.  Mark Sanford
7.  Eric Cantor
8.  Jon Huntsman
9.  Haley Barbour
10.  Steve Poizner (running for Gov. in CA)

I don't know why Gingrich didn't make it.

I see no reason to watch Jon Huntsman.

Pence should be on this list.

He governs one of the most financially sound states in the country.  Plus, he isn't a bad looking guy.  I just can't get over how bad his speeches are, though.

Out of those, I dig Sanford, Poizner, Cantor, and Romney in a primary. I'd be ecstatic if Sanford ran.

Yup, I forgot to include him with Gingrich.  I'm a huge Pence fan and I think he's more likely than Cantor (who has his eyes set on being Speaker one day, IMO).  My guess for Cilizza ranking him so high is that he was seriously considered for McCain's runningmate.

Weren't you pretty down on Romney during this last primary season?  I just searched through your old posts, and there are a bunch of quotes like this:

why on earth would the GOP nominate Romney? I have yet to see a poll with him leading. he's losing states the GOP has carried for years.

Romney flip flops way too much and is far too fake for me. I am at a loss if I have to chose between either Huckabee or Romney.

Exactly. I remember watching him at the RNC, and he just is not a good speaker.

An ok list, but Haley Barbour as #2?  I'm going to have to "lol" at that my good sir.  Haley wouldn't crack my top 20.

He's been a solid governor and whatnot, but I don't see his niche in a Republican primary and his biography is just awful - lobbyist for the Tobacco industry?  That's about as evil and god-awful as a biography as one can have in politics without killing a hooker!

I am, but if it was between all those on the list, he would be #4. He still seems like a used car salesman to me, but right now we need someone who knows something about economics, and I know Romney does, despite my personal reservations towards him.

Poizner?

He's a generic California Republican who only won because of his opponent. Nothing will come of him.

He's actually got a pretty good shot at governor because of all of the groundwork he's laid down in advance.  He'll need the Democrats to not nominate someone like Newsom, but that's not an unreasonable wish.

In order to win the GOP primary here, you have to have the California establishment support you.  Whitman would have a good chance at that, but because of all of the work Poizner has already done, he could easily score that slot.

I think he's an important guy to watch, actually.

I'm debating about changing my registration to vote for Campbell (who has the same last name as me and who deserves it more than Poizner or Whitman or probably most of the Dems).

1.  Bobby Jindal  - State is falling apart
2.  John Thune - would make a better VP
3.  Mitt Romney -  fair enough.. don't know if he could appeal to real conservatives and working class folks.
4.  Mitch Daniels  - good
5.  Bob McDonnell (running for Gov. in VA)  - maybe
6.  Mark Sanford - This guy couldn't give a speech if his life depended on it
7.  Eric Cantor -  No congressman has become president in recent times.

8.  Jon Huntsman - Maybe
9.  Haley Barbour -  LOL  the Klan would be his biggest fundrisers
10.  Steve Poizner (running for Gov. in CA) ??

Barbour might be good but let's try to avoid him. I don't think anyone could scream "Stereotypical Republican" more than Haley.

I agree...but who knows...by 2012 America may be yearning for a "Stereotypical Republican". Although, I must say, Mitch Daniels impresses me.

Exactly. I think he is Bush + 1.  Southern lobbyist?

I actually think he'd be a better president than many other potentials, but he's be a horrible candidate because of his biography.

He might be an ok VP if the top ot the ticket was a bit too off-base.

He's a tobacco lobbyist. Even he said he didn't want himself anywhere near a national ticket because of that.

But I do like the way he talks. Reminds me of the good ole boys back home.

There is little doubt that Haley could win tobacco country, haha.

I have no idea why Chris thinks he's a guy to watch.  He's a successful, well-connected governor, but that doesn't mean the guy is fit to win a GOP primary or a national, general election.

I pretty much agree with him about Jindal, Thune, and Romney. I'm surprised Tim Pawlenty didn't find his way on to the list.

Probably because he is so well-connected that should he decide to run, he would automatically "matter".  Then, should the rest of the field be weak or other candidates trip up, he would have a clear shot at the nomination.

OMG, not even Pawlenty, whereas he's the guy from MidWest and not with a posh past.

And nobody refers to Crist. I don't believe in him at all, but he may be more "to be watched" than Barbour or Poizner (LOL).
