I've always been leery of the FDP, despite it theoretically being closest to my positions.  I can't explain why, but I don't really trust them.  I've always liked the German Green Party...it always seemed like one of the most buttoned-up and professional, serious Green Parties out there.  I think I'd be a CDU/Green swing voter, unless I was in Bavaria, in which case I wouldn't dream of voting for the CSU.

Social Democratic Party: Traditional Social Democrats, have moved to the center-left in recent years.
Christian Democratic/Social Union: CSU in Bavaria, CDU everywhere else.  The model for all the world's Christian Democratic Parties, a communitarian centrist party with roots in Catholic theology, but not very religious nowadays.  CSU is more extreme and religious than CDU.
Free Democratic Party: "Liberal" in the true sense of the word, advocates free trade and less government interference in the economy.  It sounds like me on the economic front, but I'm suspicious of all groups that want to shrink government.
Greens:  Socially left, much further so than I am, serious about environment, and a creative center-left party on economic issues.
Linke: a weird fusion of the left wing of the Social Democratic Party and the remnants of the East German Communists.  Hard left, very critical of the SPD for abandoning traditional worker's issues.

Hopefully, one of the German posters will criticize me if I mischaracterized any of these.

The FDP, although I'd probably be considered on the far right fringe by German standards.

Linke, of course. CSU leaders are fun. The difference between them comes from the Weimar Republic. The CDU is largely the descendant of the Center (though for Protestants as well as Catholics), and the CSU the descendant of the BVP, which was much more consevrative (it endorsed Hindenburg over coreligionist Marx in 1925 and won him the election).

The FDP, although I'd probably be considered on the far right fringe by German standards.

Nah, that's the neo-Nazis.

Xahar, do you agree with my self-description as a Green/CDU swinger?  I'm always a bit embarrassed not to support a party over their "smell," but FDP smells more libertarian than liberal.

FDP. But as I'd be a tactical voter (against the SDP), my vote would go to the CDU when it's needed.

Die Linke - they are probably the only genuine leftwing party left.

FDP.

Although I am willing to support the CDU for tactical reasons, as afleitch said.

Yeah, that seems about right.

The FDP has described themselves as a party for rich people.
