Why Oman & Malaysia? I haven't heard of anything special happening there. Tongue

Oman is a tinpot absolute monarchy. Malaysia is ... cough... not exactly a democracy. Although I'm not sure why it was singled out - none of the other countries in Al's bill from last session was an ally I'd be proud to have either.

I move to strike section 2. Mind you that I'm leaning towards Nay on the final vote anyway. Wink

Malaysia has some serious problems. The judiciary isn't independent, and the government is officially racist. There's also the fact that the leader of the opposition gets accused of sodomy on a pretty regular basis.

I asked Sen. HappyWarrior to introduce this legislation on the behalf of the DoEA. The SoEA fully supports this measure.

Some things are simple, like free trade is good.

I will be voting against this bill

Since you love to think in terms of power, I'll put it this way:

Free trade is a useful tool internationally. Should we be compromising that by offering free trade to everyone, whether they like us or not?

I'm not fully decided on it for that reason. As great as unconditional free trade is, I'm hesitant to reward the sworn enemies of liberty. Undecided

However, in your attempt to hurt the sworn enemies of liberty, you hurt yourself even more in the process. By limiting free trade between countries, you guarentee that both countries have fewer resources and are more miserable than they otherwise would be.

I guess if we get their money, it's all the same in the end. Smiley

Using anti free trade measures against countries that are viewed as something less than robust pluralistic democracies is a dog that just won't hunt. I will be opposing this legislation.

We shouldn't bar trade with anyone, it only hinders our economic oppurtunity.

We aren't barring trade with anyone, just returning to current real life rules.
