Can we be sure that any of the presidents weren't racists beyond a shadow of a doubt? I don't think so.

Everybody is subconsciously racist. The important question is whether or not they allow it to influence their interactions with other people.

Bollocks. Race as an idea didn't exist until probably the 15th Century and even today what are construed as 'races' are little more than fictions from a scientific viewpoint. That isn't the same thing as to say there isn't subconscious racism.

Well yes, it's hard to be subconsciously racist if you have no concept of race. That aside, people generally react differently to those who are "different," even if that difference is fictitious at best.

There's a fundamental difference between fearing and hating things and people that are obviously different (we are all guilty of that to an extent; I certainly am) and having a concept of race.

I guess that would be more accurate than saying people are automatically subconsciously racist. What the concept of race does though is feed into the idea of difference. I guess I was confused by that difference since "race" is one of the most oft-emphasized differences I've noticed. In San Francisco, things like sex & height are not really thought of at all.

I would like more of cultural differences (and certainly never height) or differences in personal habits, though I guess those wouldn't be huge issues in San Francisco. I'd agree with the rest of what you said.

I mentioned height as an example of more subconscious discrimination. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember hearing that people are generally more likely to trust taller people. Despite that, I find that some of the most powerful & widely trusted people I know are quite short.

As long as race exists as a social concept, we'll base our opinions of people on it.

Even if the it didn't exist you couldn't but a black man in Finland (just an example) and not get lesser educated people to try and put two and two together.

True. But a condition of it losing meaning as a social concept would likely be racial intermixing to the point of indistinguishability.

And we also must remember that outside Europe, the idea of race is often relatively modern.

John Adams.

He hated the idea of slavery, it made him sick.

Jefferson wasn't a racist either, I believe.

Opposing slavery and not being racist are 2 different things.

To answer the question:
Warren Harding.

When faced with rumors he might have black ancestry, he even joked about his ancestors having "crossed the line". Also, he gave a controversial speech defending the rights of blacks to a conservative Southern audience.
