PA-Rasmussen: Sen. Specter (R) in a tight race with Matthews (D)

In thinking about the 2010 Election for United States Senate suppose you had a choice between Republican Arlen Specter and Democrat Chris Matthews. If the election were held today would you vote for Republican Arlen Specter or Democrat Chris Matthews?

Matthews - 43%

Good news for Specter from that Rasmussen poll - 68% of Republicans have a favorable opinion of him. Sure it should be higher for a Republican Senator but that rating surely isn't weak. The problem for him is that only 70% of Republicans said they'd vote for him in the General.

I'm one of these Republicans caught in a really tough spot. It's pretty funny. I really never want to vote for Specter. I've even said that in a Specter vs. Schwartz matchup, I'd still write in someone.

I love saying that I'd consider voting for Matthews. When push comes to shove, I won't do it. There really is no way that I could. I'd either write in or...don't make me say it...

I think my latter option is what most of these undecided Republicans would do as well.

This is closer than I thought it'd be... Specter's age is probably hurting him. Still, he's one of the few moderate Republicans left and one of the few northeast Republican Senators left so I wouldn't exactly be ecstatic about Dems taking him out.

By the way, it looks like Specter has already tried to keep us conservatives happy. My Mom got a mailer today about drilling and it provided a quote for Specter and his desire to open drilling in ANWR. Kind of funny since I'm about 90% sure he opposed that before.

I cannot with a straight face buy a poll that suggests that Chris Matthews can almost out name rec. Arlen Specter. That guy is the king of name rec. I don't care how blue PA trends, if the best we can do is Matthews, then its gonna be up to the Republicans to knock off Specter. or cancer
