Sununu hadn't committed any sins though.

Sununu's sin was remaining an unapologetic conservative in a state that was rapidly speeding towards the center. Gregg is a little more moderate on social issues (voted against the marriage amendment, for stem-cell research). He also has had more time to become an institution in New Hampshire -- three terms in the Senate following two terms as Governor.
