Calling people racist just because they don't happen to vote for a black man is incorrect.

So it's a coincidence that white Democrats happen to vote for the Republican while the Democrat happens to be a black, even though white Democrats in practically every other state/region voted overwhelmingly for their party's nominee?

Let me guess...southerners like McCain's grin? Is that the reason?

It's not unusual for white southern Democrats to vote for the more conservative candidate. I know a ton of individuals like that who are very tolerant.

True, but white areas in the South generally swung R, bucking the national trend.

probably true...but as Xahar said...relevant to the national numbers, Southern whites are much more Republican than usual....are you truly arguing that's not because of plain old racism?

The non-southern White vote went to McCain by the way, narrowly.

It raises questions when thousands of Democrats who voted for Kerry over Bush decided to vote for McCain over Obama, or not at all. They certainly didn't vote for Kerry because of his relative conservatism.

LA seems to have gone in reverse since katrina.

Look what happened to the crime rates in areas where the evacuees went after Katrina.

You can be such a racist talking hack at times.

Wasn't someone arguing this summer that Obama would lose white Democrats nationwide?

I think it was J.J.

Yes. (Who else would say something like that anyway?)

Some of it is probably racism, but not all.  McCain is a war hero and doesn't have a pro-big business image like W has, so I imagine he would appeal to a lot of blue dog Democrats regardless of which left-winger was running against him.

LOL

This one didn't.  Real blue dogs voted for Obama.

It probably was mostly racism, which nobody should be shocked about.

That would be even better if it were even more strongly correlated with...

Could somebody create us a 2000 to 2008 swing map?

but in any case it is disturbing that most white Dems in the Deep South voted for McCain.

How does it compare with white Republicans in New England voting for Obama?

Obama didn't win New England by so much that he would have won Republicans, but since this is an interesting question, here are the results:

NEW ENGLAND WHITE REPUBLICANS

NH: McCain 90% Obama 10%
RI: McCain 89% Obama 10%
CT: McCain 87% Obama 11%
VT: McCain 85% Obama 13%
ME: McCain 84% Obama 15%

MA: non-statistically significant sample

I would imagine fewer crossover votes in New England than the Deep South could be because those in New England who are dissatisfied with the national party have already become Ind. or Dem, whereas Dems in the Deep South have remained Democrats. This also explains why there are more white Dem state legislatures in the Deep Siouth than white GOPers in New England.

The New York Times already has:

http://elections.nytimes.com/2008/results/president/map.html

Click on "voting shifts". You can also compare 2008 to 2004, 1996, or 1992. You can also click on each state to zoom in for a closer look. 1992 is particularly interesting given that the national popular and electoral vote margins were similar. It also looks suspiciously like a population density map of the US in most places. Smiley
