The guy who's a leading candidate to be appointed head of agriculture is an African-American from the South, the most conservative AA in Congress who once got caught peeing in a cup in an airplane.

Also, James Jones, his highest national security adviser (and almost a cabinet post) is from Missouri and the Secretary of Agricultural is very likely to be a Georgian.

This election is also the first one since, what, Eisenhower when there wasn't at least one Southerner on the ticket of either the Dems or the GOP?

Nice "try?"  I view Bush I as being from the South and so does the home-state feature on this very website we're on.  I don't know why you are so self-righteously smug over a quibble, especially on the internet.

I think using the maps made on this site is an objective measuring stick.

Depends on whether we're counting Maryland (Agnew) as the South.  If not, then 1968 and 1972 didn't have Southerners either.  But if we *are* counting Maryland, then why not also Delaware?

My understanding was that Nixon was South-conscious and felt Maryland was "Southern enough" while Obama just didn't give a flying F

And again, I remind people that Obama's top national security adviser is James Jones, a Missourian - that person holds a higher position in his administration than much of his cabinet.

AND THIS IS THE GUY WHO'S CURRENTLY FAVORED TO BE HIS SECRETARY OF AGRICULTURE

Sanford Dixon Bishop Jr

Hell, his middle name almost sounds like "dixie" and he's from Georgia.

As the article points out, some of this is due to a lack of a Democratic bench in the South -- you need expert talent in order to recruit it.

And again, Obama's top national security adviser is James Jones (I?-MO), and One of Obama's inner circle and press secretary is from Alabama, Robert Gibbs is dixie-born and bred.  I mean, there's no intentional exclusion of the South.

Obama's the first non-Southern president we've had for a while, so it shouldn't strike us as surprising that his two main recruiting pools are Chicago and New York City.  The bulge of windy and big applers has pretty much pushed out a lot of the lower-level picks.

And they'll have a Southern person in the cabinet, patience
