Good. These people have had the run of the nation for forty years, more than enough time to make up for their inferiority complexes regarding the Civil War. Let them eat cake - or cornbread.

The idea of refusing to appoint Southerners to punish the region's politics is stupid

Nobody's suggested that. The idea of engaging in Affirmative Action for a group of Scots-Irish is just as stupid, and yet they seem to demand it of Presidential candidates to take them seriously.

EDIT: Furthermore, I believe the region should be punished, though more to the point it out to have been completely depopulated during the Civil War and filled with Northern immigrants. They have foisted upon the North time and again a cabal of incompetent yokels who are better at campaigning than actually governing. They have insisted upon a regionist economic policy in this nation that provides for their economic interests to the detriment of our own, while providing absolutely nothing in return. I have no use for the South, or Southerners generally, and I'd have just as soon given them their own nation just for the pleasure of watching it collapse into financial destitution within a decade. To hell with everything South of the Mason-Dixon line. Its entire culture is the byproduct of a psychological - and just as often physiological - degradation brought on by a potent combination of regressive religiosity and inferior genetics.

Yeah, I'll agree with that; Virginia and North Carolina and parts of South Carolina and Georgia have been Reconstructed, albeit a hundred and fifty years too late.

The rest...? F**k 'em.

but the glee in this thread is seriously misplaced and/or potentially dangerous.

Go look at some of the "Real 'Murrica" rhetoric from the campaign season and get back to me on that one.

EDIT: Here you go. I'm tired, as an urban Northerner, of paying for the self-insecurities of a bunch of unwashed rubes just so some pastoral moron can get his jollies and feel my equal.

EDIT II: This guy says it with more gusto than I ever could (warning: vulgarity). Here's a hint - people that wave the Stars and Bars aren't 'real Americans'.

My thoughts exactly. The people down there are actually very creepy, especially in the bible belt towns.

Agreed, but it's not even just cultural. The reason Southerners like to suck at Reagan's gilded phallus is because it keeps these fatass white collar middle-management types in the Sun Belt well-fed, since neither they nor their employees actually have to do any industrial labor; likewise, they don't have much of a use for unions, since they don't have (and never really had) the industrial backbone of a real economy. So it works just fine for them - to the detriment of actual workers in the North, who do more than computer programming or pressing buttons on a dye-mixer.

Wait, so people actually believe Obama did this on purpose? I see the article did its job.

I don't believe Obama to be even half as disgraceful as his hardcore, Internet fanatics.

I'm not an 'Obama fanatic'. I'm an actual leftist, and I don't give a good God damn about your 'grace'.

This election is also the first one since, what, Eisenhower when there wasn't at least one Southerner on the ticket of either the Dems or the GOP?

Nice try, no dice. Neither Reagan nor Bush I were from the South (and no, Bush's transplantation from Connecticut to Texas doesn't count), and the region preferred that ticket to native-son Jimmy Carter. The South is ideologically motivated, first; its regionalist extremism is merely a logical extrapolation from that ideology.

I believe he meant on either or the Dems or Republicans.

I know that's what he meant, but the idea (I believe) he was striking at is that the region just prefers good-ol'-boy candidates of any stripe, which is demonstratively not the case, as 1980 shows.

Second, to everyone here who thinks or wishes that this is some way to punish the south, you're doing nothing but displaying your own intolerance on this subject. You blatantly stereotype an entire region of the country and assume for some reason everyone here is exactly the same politically. I'm not going to name any names, although this is honestly really directed at one person in particular, but please grow up.

That's absolutely right, and I shall continue to do so until you can manage to elect someone sane to your state governorship.
