Oh dear, he'd be the first or second black Republican in Congress in what, 50 years?

Why the "Oh dear?"

Because it'd be good, and he'd also be the second elected black person in the Senate as well.

Oh. We usually read "Oh dear" as a bad thing.  Tongue

Third, at least. Gary Franks in Connecticut in the 1990s plus of course J.C. Watts.

Knowing nothing about Texas, I of course, say "who?."

It's actually extremely good for our country to get beyond racial divisions and I always am happy to enjoy Republican minorities even if it hurts the Democratic Party.  Best of luck to him in depressing turnout.

But yeah, it's good for the country to have Steeles

Now the Democrats need to nominate another Hispanic. That's when the real fun begins.

I'm all for minorities winning elections but if Democrats nominate a white guy and we win it just because he's white... I'll feel kinda sad. Sad

As a native Texan, I have complete faith that Texas could elect an African-American. It would just entertaining, in a very sad, sad way, to see what sort of alliances and support developed in a Hispanic Democrat vs. Black Republican race.

You're right

I Imagine it would be Hispanics and Liberals (Austin) Vs. Suburbanites, Blacks, and a large percentage of normal Republican voters.

It could get nasty, but I still think Republican Williams would win easily, perhaps even more than normal.

And... if you don't think Williams would win the black vote, go ahead and look up he and Wallace Jefferson's election results in Democrat areas (both are black Republicans)

What about the white vote? Rural, specifically.

Yeah.. just checked, often wins over 50% in Houston and Dallas inner city, and wins the normal 65-78% range in the rural areas where Republicans dominate.

One good example Wallace Jefferson, the black Republican Chief Justice of the Texas Supreme Court, ran against a Libertarian only, and tended to get 88%+ statewide.

What I'm trying to point out is, he wins big in Republican areas, and either wins or loses close in the inner city, there's a lot of black name recognition, and he wins every bit of it.

On the other hand, rural Republicans may vote for Williams straight ticket, not knowing his race. But from personal experience, I've found most rural Texans to e very well read on their politicians (often dreadfully so).

The good thing for him, I suppose would be that there probably won't be any outrageous false rumours flying around that stick...

Well I guess if he'd get that much support, I could support him as well, although his little senate page doesn't say much about the things that matter to me right now. But I don't really know much about the Democrats who are running as well, the only one that kind of interests me is Bill White.

It's kind of goofy to discuss how he would win the general election when no one has sketched out a path for him to win the primary election. Senate is a bit higher profile than the races he's won in before.

I have been following this guy closely for years. I hope he runs and wins. It would be great for the GOP, for African Americans(never good to have all your eggs in one basket), and for the country as a whole.
