The culture of this country is indebted to the South.

Which may explain why we're one of the most backward first world nations.

NO we are not, dude. What are you talking about?

Latin american levels of inequality, horrible race relations(between anglo-saxons and everyone else), massive fundamentalism, high poverty levels, not even civil unions nationally etc. Only Poland is worse.

You are being a bigot right now. All prejudice is stupid. Not liking somebody because where they are from is like not liking somebody because they were born on a Tuesday. It is true that certain places may have certain trends of people but this does not justify any prejudice. If you want to be liberal, then you have to treat everybody you meet like an individual and not attach labels to them. You attack the south for being prejudice but you are doing it yourself. Being from the south means you are from the south, it does not mean you are racist or whatever.

Bigots exist everywhere, no one is denying this, but they exist in a more concentrated fashion in the old Confederacy.

I'm not claiming my state is any better here either, Ohio sucks, but Ohio was not on the forefront of defending slavery and opposing a woman's right to vote.

You're describing libertarianism, buddy, not liberalism, which has always taken humanity as a gestalt.

You measure humanity by getting to know the individual, not knowing where they are from. Treating people as individuals and being against prejudice is one of the first principles of liberalism, it is in England anyway.

Ohio is kentucky with snow and fewer blacks. It's not really a northern state.

If I may ask, what does someone being Jewish have to do with how Southern they are. The antebellum South, unlike the antebellum North, was very welcoming to Jewish immigrants and many Jews did come to the South. For most of the antebellum period, America's largest Jewish community was in guess what, Charleston, South Carolina. All of the major antebellum Southern ports still are home to influential Jewish communities, Jewish communities that in many cases, have been there for more than 200 years.

So, what does being Jewish have to do with being a Southerner or not, because you just attacked a person saying they couldn't be Southern because they were Jewish. Am I not Southern because my grandmother was Croatian

English liberalism is a more libertarian version of American conservatism; it has nothing to do with New Deal politics.

And to bring up something I left out originally, because someone brought up the Election of 1980. Yeah, Carter lost the South, Carter only won 6 states total. Carter was somewhat of a failure as a President in case anyone forgot

But in most Southern states, Carter's loss margin to Reagan was within a percentage point, and often times, a few thousand votes, and Carter won most of the rural counties, if you dont believe me, look at an election of 1980 county map. What lost him most of the South in that election (and he still held WV and GA) was that voters in the metro areas who had supported him in 1976 turned against him for 1980.

You're on the best site in the world for maps.  It's really easy to include them in your args Smiley

No one is forcing any of you to live here if it isn't tolerable enough for you. But I agree, race relations are great in other countries. I mean, France and England have a wonderful time with their Muslim populations rioting and burning cars in the street..

Do many of you listen to yourself talk? If things are so wonderful everywhere else, why not leave? I'd rather like here than in states where a race might riot at any time.

Here we go again, with that good ol' "The South is the REAL 'MURRICA!!!" rhetoric. Dumbass, that doesn't work, you people were the ones who left the Union.

Over 3/4 of the people in NC never owned slaves and the first time NC voted to pull out of the union it failed. The only reason it did pull out of the union because Lincoln wanted NC to attack SC.

How many Anglo-Saxon's are in this country anyway. I thought most of them lived in the Northeast, the WASP's after all. Biloxi is Latin and Slavic (with some Vietnamese and Blacks thrown in for fun), so I'm not getting where you're coming from on this one.

Can we please stop this? Frankly, it's embarrassing and pointless.

Let's stop bashing entire regions and their people...even if it is amusing. Tendencies, whether political, cultural, or both say absolutely nothing about individual people, and it's quite stupid to get into this kind of regional "fight".

And these are the morons who whine and cry and piss and moan about 'socialism'.

Let's look at the number of Southerners who have been President in the last forty years:

Lyndon Johnson
Jimmy Carter
G.H.W. Bush (debatable)
Bill Clinton
George W. Bush

vs.

Richard Nixon
Gerald Ford
Ronald Reagan

No more Affirmative-Action for Scots-Irish trash. Let them earn it.

Amazing stuff..
I actually made a map:
Green states (ones that would be better off if they were not in the Union)
Blue States (the rest)

And just in case you were wondering: Green States win.

Where was I saying that the south is the real America in my post? I hate to disappoint you, but I am a second generation Greek-American. My parents came over from Greece and left NYC because race relations were so bad. They had the change their last name because otherwise people would treat them like trash there. They found a better home in Florida and North Carolina. Anyway, the south did what I just said. They didn't like what was going on, so they left. They didn't sit around and complain about it. But nice try. If you have no argument, result to personal attacks and making up things I never said.

That would be myself. It's true that my comment about the South being synonymous with Baptist pluralities was a stereotype and not entirely true. The examples you pointed out are valid and some of them were interesting. But the fact that you can only point to a handful of counties, concentrated around the Delta region, as counterexamples does not entirely invalidate my original point. Plus, Southern culture is not the same as Cajun culture. The best you can say is that the latter is variation of the former, and expression of the South's diversity.

That does not make Maryland a part of the south. Wallace's win in the primary here was only 39%, on the same day that he was winning 51% in Michigan. This was his best day of the entire campaign season because the primary occurred days after he had been shot, and law and order/crime issues were high on the public's mind even before the shooting. A great deal of people switched to Wallace due to sympathy. Wallace had been campaigning in Maryland vigorously over the course of at least three weeks. Wallace did not really campaign much in other northern states. He campaigned for several days in Wisconsin and carried 22% there. This state decisively rejected a segregationist Governor in 1966. I will admit that Maryland was more southern in nature in 1972 than it is today. But that is due to more than just the influx of "a demographic", but rather sweeping economic changes across the state.

You guys are being absurd. I had no idea such attitudes exist in the Dem party. Not all southerners hold those beliefs, and plenty of northerners hold them too.

Hate sexists, racists and homophobic people but not all southerners are like that, therefore it is unjustified to generalize when you talk of your hatred.

That crap occurred all over the place. You're really dense if you believe it only happened in the South. You refused to respond to my argument about California and other non-southern states banning gay marriage. Typical. Just because you repeat an argument full of holes doesn't mean it will become true.
