Presume the year 2008 is exactly the same except for the President/Veep choices the parties make being these candidates. How does the electoral map look like with 2 conservative democrats facing off against a pair of moderate/liberal republicans?

Harold Ford is nothing but a former representative. That is way too small of a political office to suddenly be on a presidential ticket. He would have to be something like a US senator instead. Romney wins in a landslide.

True but presume this was a 2008 where he was in position to get the nod.

My personal guess is this:

The candidates don't really matter so much as the fact that this is a match between conservative dems and moderate/liberal republicans. I'm curious as to how that'd play out given current electoral/cultural geography.

Two accomplished leaders against two lightweights.

No contest.

Romney/Pawlenty                 450
Ford/Sebelius                          88

A few states change, but we still have our first black president.
