Al Gore wins in 2000 by carrying New Hampshire.

President Gore pursues war in Afghanistan after 9/11, but does not go to war in Iraq.

The economy tanks during the 2008 election campaign, as in real life.

The election is between McCain/Palin and Obama/Biden.

After 8 years of Democrat Gore, the war continuing in Afghanistan, and an economic meltdown during the campaign..........

Would we now be looking at President Elect McCain instead of President Elect Obama?

Please discuss.

Probably, but McCain probably wouldnt be the Republican candidate since the Republicans would have been in better position. He may have been nominated in 2004 though.

and obama likely wouldnt be the dem nominee as he wouldnt have ever spoken out against the iraq war thous giving him support amongst the progressive crowd[though hed likely get alot of support from them still just not enough to win] thats not to say i dont think he wouldn't have been a senator [i think thats still a high possibility]and hed still likely have presidential ambitions i just doubt he would run in 2008 or that he would even be nominated.

If the economy had still been as bad as it is, then the incumbent party would've still lost.

I would argue the economy would not be as bad if Gore had been in office the last 8 years, but I'm sure a lot of Republicans would disagree with that assertion.

If Bush had lost in 2000 then McCain would've been the 2004 nominee. And he would've lost to Gore.

Bush could have been re-nominated in 2004 or 2008. After 16 years of Clinton/Gore; Obama and Hillary would have sat it out for 2012.

Jeb Bush would probably been more likely to win the nomination than W. in 04 and 08.

He would have already had his chance in 2000, and Jeb was generally viewed as the more serious Bush.

But to republicans Gore would have stolen FL and the presidency from W. so if he wanted another shot I think his brother would have to respect that.
