What if Hillary who was the fav going into the 2008 election stayed true to form.  She easily won the nomination on Super Tuesday.  Meanwhile Romney and McCain went to the limits, but Mitt pulled it off.   Hillary tapped Warner for Vp and Mitt Romney tapped Tom Ridge.   The wallstreet melt down never took place and the main issue during the campaign was the Iraq war and other social issues.  Having the cover of a Moderate like Warner; Clinton is able to pose for most of the campaign as a center-left moderate and cast the team of Romney/ Ridge as pro-choice / soft republicans.

Same thing, but I see you kept NV republican and flipped CO.  I flipped AZ because i figure Hillary would have did well among hispanics and lest fact it - obama would have had a shot if he wanted to campaign there.  I also figured Romney would do better in CO then Mccain ever could have.

I kind of doubt Romney would call his pro-life stance into question by picking Ridge...

Regardless, Clinton/Warner win big.

Neither Romney nor Ridge would be able to win their own states.

Here's my best guess:

Popular Vote

Clinton/Warner  52.8%
Romney/Ridge   45.7%
Other                  1.5%

Electoral Vote
Clinton/Warner  360
Romney/Ridge   178

Overall, the election is not that much different than what takes place in real life.  However, instead of competing in Indiana, Clinton competes in both Arkansas and West Virginia and she wins them both.  She of course loses Indiana.  Clinton competes in North Carolina, but narrowly loses there, but she narrowly wins in Missouri.  Additionally, unlike Obama in real life, her campaign makes no attempt to organize in Omaha, and Romney takes that electoral vote.  Finally, Michigan would have been Romney's last stand instead of Pennsylvania (which was McCain's last stand in real life), but Romney would have still lost there by 10 or 11 points.

Without the economic downturn, Romney would be crushed. There would be a poor turnout in Republicans, since Mitt won't be able to convince Republicans he is a conservative.
