My vote is Mainline Protestantism-Catholicism-Evangelical Protestantism. The biggest issue between the latter two is most evangelicals actually agree with and follow the bullshit shoveled out by their churches while most Catholics don't (Before you dispute this Phil I have two words for you: Birth control.)

I tend to prefer absolute zero "bullsh**t shoveled out by churches," but option two I guess.

I find Catholicism more interesting, though.  It's like the Lord of the Rings of religions.  I can respect the intricate traditions and systems and symbolism and everything.

I guess I could pass for a Methodist, if it weren't for the God-belief.  Mostly because I've never met more than a handful of Methodists who know what Methodism is.  Which, I guess, is why mainline Protestantism isn't entirely unattractive Tongue

On the other hand, the evangelical black churches kick your collective non-charismatic asses for entertainment value.  Maybe I should rethink my entire order.

So then what about Scientology?

Option two.  Though one reason I am Episcopalian is that our denomination has people who self-identify as Evangelical, as Anglo-Catholic and as Protestant.  Hell, we even have "The Charismatic Episcopal Church" as an offshoot.  I like that.

As long as we are on the same page theologically when it comes to the Nicene Creed, I am good.  I might wish to persuade someone of my opinion on X.  Or they might wish to encourage me to worship more like Y.  But the historic creeds are the heart of our faith and a perfect summary of what Scripture teaches in a nutshell.

(As to those Episcopalians who mouth the Creed but reject parts of it...I love them, too.  But I really think they would feel more at home among Unitarians.  How you can SAY Christ is risen weekly and then write books calling a bodily resurrection a "quaint fable" is beyond me.)

Well, three guesses which option a near atheist cultural WASP would pick. Tongue

Mainline and evangelical Protestantism: what is the difference?

Well, some of it is about whether or not to take as literally  true the entirety of the Biblical text. And Mainlines tend to be a bit more open to the notion that Torie types have perhaps some remote possibility of making it to heaven, despite their well, stubborn refusal to make the requisite leap of faith.

And yes, I don't know a damn about what I am talking about here. When it comes to religion, I just pretend. Tongue

I was never going to argue that Catholics follow/believe everything that my Church believes.

Well, option 1...primarily because evangelism is so tied in with fundamentalism these days. I wish that weren't the case.
