I'm working on a map where I divide the country into 50 states of approximately the same size (6 million).  I'm using 2008 census estimates and the current congressional districts in order to determine what the population distribution is within each state.  I will finish the map in a couple of hours, but I thought I'd post a message here just in case someone else wants to try it.  After I post the map I was hoping you would try to guess who the senators of each state will be.

So this is the map:

Anyone willing to guess what the names, the senators and the governors of each state would be (assuming that the states were created now)?

These btw are the 50 states:
VT, NH, ME, NY20, 21, 23, 24
MA
CT, RI and NY-19, 22
NY 1-7, 9 and 10
NY 8 and 11-18
NJ 5-13
Arizona
Indiana
Maryland
MI 1-6, 8 and 10
Wisconsin
Washington
Missouri
Alaska, Oregon and Hawaii
DE, NJ1-4, PA-1, 2, 7 and 8
NY25-29, PA 5, 10, 11 and 15
Rest of Pennsylvania
DC and VA-1, 2, 7, 8, 10 and 11
WV and rest of VA
ID, MT, WY, ND, SD and NE
MN and IA4 and 5
IA1-3 and IL11 and 15-18
IL 1-10, 13 and 14
MI7, 9 and 11-15.  Also OH 5 and 9
OH 4, 6, 10-14 and 16-18
OH1-3, 7, 8 and 15.  Also KY3-6
IL12 and 19, KY 1 and 2, TN 5 and 7-9
NC 1-6, 7, 8 and 13
The rest of TN and NC
CA41, 44, 45 and 49-53
Most of Los Angeles (9 districts)
Utah and Nevada
Bay Area
The light Green part
The part north of Los Angeles
What's left of California
Colorado and New Mexico
Kansas and Oklahoma, except for OK-2
Most of Western Texas
Most of Southern Texas and Houston
Dallas and the surrounding areas
rest of TX
Arkansas, OK-2 and LA 4, 5 and 7
MS and the rest of LA
Alabama and GA7, 10 and 11
SC and GA 9 and 12
The rest of Georgia
FL1-8 and 24

Nevada and Utah together? What an awful idea.

Why? The nevadans and non-mormon utahns would outweigh the mormons.

You are used pre-2006 Georgia Congressional districts; 10 and 7 don't touch either 11 or Alabama.

This is the map now:

Considering the distribution of the population in the West, it was a bit difficult to put them with anyone else.  I considered putting Las Vegas in one of the 6 Californian states and adding some of the Northern California CDs to Utah-Nevada, but California was already too difficult to divide, so I did not want to mess it up any more.
I used maps I found on google images.  If it is any help, the area of Georgia that goes with Alabama does not include Atlanta.

And this is a map of the 50 states without colors for anyone who wants to guess which states Obama and McCain would win.

I took on this same project in 2004 and my results have been shown on a few threads here over the years, as recently as Nov '08. I used the 2000 data and divided by county, and I also used a wider spread of population. I'm planning to update it with 2010 projections at some point. When I do I expect there will be some redrawing to accommodate population shifts.

Nothing much changes for my state.

Sen Sherrod Brown
Sen Tim Ryan
Gov Ted Strickland

I am pretty peeved that you've divided my city in two though.  OH-12 and OH-15 basically split Columbus right down the middle and you've put them in separate states.  Not Cool.  Angry  You should have given OH-4 to the Southwest Ohio/Eastern Kentucky state and kept OH-15 with the Eastern Ohio State.

He could also have swapped OH 6 and 18 for OH 7 and 15. That would put the entire Ohio river valley region with E KY and all the Columbus region with Cleveland.

Sorry.  Columbus was meant to be in the state with Eastern Kentucky.

This would have definitely been a Democratic state.  It includes Austin and San Antonio which are democratic cities.

No, Obama would have won that state. All he did was take the Mountains way from NC.

I had previously redistricted the country into 100 senate districts (because 100 is twice as perfect as 50).  Districts are based on 2000 census.

And now I combined the 100 districts into 50 districts, each with two subdistricts.
