In 1960 JFK won 303 and essentially tied the popular vote. In fact, this was Bush's 2000 map vs. the national average (Gore +0.51)

Bush 301, Gore 237

I think it is very possible in this extremely polarized electorate. Nate Silver needs to run a simulation on this. It's easy to see Romney running up absurd margins in red states, improving his margins in blue states because of his moderate hero image (lol), while still losing an increasingly diverse  state like Virginia and losing Ohio (because of his comments about letting the auto industry die).

Romney might get a little boost in the NYC metro area due to discontent on wall street with Obama. No chance of him getting any electoral votes from NJ/NY/CT though.
