They'll just dismantle the district in after 2010 anyway, so who cares?

Edit: Happy now?

Given that they pull in $79,500 a year, I'd be surprised to see a State Senator commit political suicide over a seat in the U.S. House.  Not exactly a good time to be looking for a new job, especially if you're a Republican in New York.

Not necessarily: all he has to do is serve his two terms, retire when the district gets dismantled after the census, wait the appropriate amount of time and rake in the lobbyist/"consultant" bucks.

Paterson has to call a special election which would be 30-40 days after he calls it. Or something like that. Earliest time would be March, then.

You wanted excitement, here's, well, a poll. From Siena College:

Jim Tedisco (R) - 46
Scott Murphy (D) - 34

Tedisco's favorables are 47/20, Murphy's are 29/10.

Of course, if the deadline for military absentees is extended, we likely won't know who wins for at least a week or two.

I'll say Murphy by 0.4%.

Why would Paterson be holding an event in Scott Murphy's hometown tomorrow?

Obviously he plans on appointing Congressman Murphy to something.

Remind me again which county Murphy is from?

Warren, I believe.

My calculations have it at 76,956 - 76,907 for Murphy, using the AP totals and calculating the difference between their results for Saratoga and the county results (which are all in).

Edit: which they've since updated. Never mind.

Has there been a special House election (barring at-large seats, where there may be more people than usual) with this high turnout before? 150,000+ votes is pretty impressive, considering 2006's general election turnout was about 220,000.

It's really hard to make any kind of political hay out of a race that was so ridiculously 50-50. Not that people won't try, but...

Boy, wouldn't Tedisco feel stupid then?

Gillibrand's ballot is valid too.

What matters is that she intended not to be in the district during election day when she requested the absentee, not whether she actually was.

Oh no, not voter intent again!

Murphy leads by 365.

Murphy 79, 951
Tedisco 79, 586

Essex and Warren county updates.

I think that if Tedisco drags this out it only hurts him in the long run (if he has intentions of running in '10).

He is just pathetic. It is time for him to move on.

He has NO CHANCE of winning. Give it up now. Why are Republicans wasting money on this?

More fuel for "don't let Democrats steal elections!!!!11" fundraising letters.

He's not wasting money. These ballots have not been counted yet. Don't you agree that all ballots should be counted?

Well, he should concede. That doesn't mean the rest of the ballots don't get counted. They counted the rest of the ballots in the Presidential election for over a month afterward even though McCain had the grace to concede when it was clear he'd lost.

Oh I absolutely agree. But to say that he is wasting money making these ballots get counted is just ludicrous.

Isn't he challenging the majority of the votes that haven't been counted yet?

Again, congratulatoins to Murphy.  Is the House finally at 435 members again?

Nope, Hilda Solis' seat is still vacant.
