I know this would never happen but let's just say that Bush and Cheney decide to leave when people start questioning Scooter Libby and the Plame case?

How whould the US be now?

Note: This would be an outrageous scenario but some ppl have done worse ones.

Dennis Hastert, 44th President of the United States, in accordance with the Constitution of the United States. I figure that he couldn't botch the response to Hurricane Katrina so badly as Dubya, and he has the Republican nomination for President if he so desires. Otherwise I see him less effective as President than Gerald Ford due to ideological rigidity. The Democrats take over the House and Senate as the result of the midterm elections of 2006.

The war in Iraq remains a mess,  and the economy melts down in September 2008 just in time to seal the fate of the GOP nominee for President. Obama picks up what he wins in real life except that he adds Arizona, Montana, and Missouri.
