I know Specter is liberal on social issues, but is he that left?

The Republican party needs more like him, but I'm glad he's decided to leave the dark side.

FOX headline, Specter 'Turns back on GOP voters'. Disgusting.

That is a biased headline. Although I really don't understand why Specter was apparently so sure he was sticking with the GOP last month.

It is an opinion expressed by the pissed off conservatives at FOX.

This was definately a political move, there's no question there. His specific views have been more in line with the Dems than the Reps for at least 30 years. However, why is this the perfect time to be announcing this, and why did he have to lie about it last month?

Given the ever crumbling power of the fundamentalist wing of the GOP, it might be better to try to build back the 'Rockefeller Republican' wing, enough so that they could actually compete in states like ME next time. I'd certainly consider voting for an economic conservative that wasn't a religious zealot.

At least now we will have a pro-choice Dem representing PA.

I'm glad Specter took the time to rip the neo-con wing of the party. They really have destroyed its reputation here. My father was a Republican since Reagan and he's changed his party and now votes Dem because of the Bush-era politics.
