According to my sources, the entire thing was drummed up to counter the Specter news, and then allow for the opportunity for Ridge to essentially endorse Toomey, which he did today.

Well, I heard he never intended to run (which I thought anyway) but I didn't hear it was to counter all the Specter coverage.

Dumb strategy since it made the blogosphere ramble on about how unelectable Toomey is and how great Ridge would be.

You are right. Ridge indeed will not run.

Ridge won't challenge Specter for Pa. Senate seat

Right, we know he won't run but Super is saying he only entertained it to keep the focus off Specter and to set up an endorsement of Toomey (which doesn't seem likely after his Hardball appearance tonight)

No, not really: http://www.politico.com/singletitlevideo.html?bcpid=1155201977&bctid=22480504001

If that's an endorsement, then I'm a thing that I'm clearly not.

Pat Toomey, is that you?

So, my sources got it wrong.  It happens.  His initial statement sounded supportive.

*shrug*

My sources were correct during "VP Watch '08".

It seems weird though that Ridge won't say that he'd vote for Toomey over the Democrat, despite staying silent in the primary.  How hard is it to say "I'll vote for whoever we nominate"

I think the national party is panicking in light of recent general election polling.  I mean, they've recently ran robocalls against Sestak and indirectly praising Specter....

That's another issue with the (at one time potential) Ridge candidacy that I noted before - I think Ridge and Specter like each other.

But didn't even Ed say he's "support" [or whatever] the Democratic nominee, even while working against him and for Specter in the background

That's because Rendell is a true hack but he really wouldn't put his heart and soul into beating Arlen.
