Seems kind of weird how they're holding out.

Probably. People will certainly ever understand that EU is the only solution for europeans to have a political influence in the world ( and to save their economies... ).

Not really, no. I believe fisheries remain an important issue, as in Iceland, and economic differences between the EU and Norway are also important. Of course, there's always the issue of so-called "national independence" and so forth.

In addition, unless Norway's economy goes down the ultimate sh**tter as Iceland's economy did, it remains relatively unlikely for political reasons. Only DNA and Høyre, IIRC, officially support membership and by consequence, neither could really join the EU outright.

For example, of the current government, DNA's junior partners- the Centre and Socialist Lefties are both opposed to joining.

That could evolute. Remember when UK wanted to create his own alliance.

Norway is different than the UK. It's relation with the EU is closer to Iceland's relation with the EU than the UK's past relation. Fisheries and the quota stuff are all very important issues in the equation.

As of now, unlike Iceland, Norway isn't anywhere close joining. Plus, voters rejected it twice.

Right.
That's the key: Norway has enough money to keep on alone for a long time.
Why would they do differently ?
They have free access to EU markets, they can protect their national activities like fisheries.
With some peace missions, they have gained diplomatic respect and aura.

Norway applies a lot of European legislation already through its membership in EFTA.

I suspect they will once the oil runs out. There really is no point for them though. Through EFTA they get all the good stuff out of the EU while escaping most of the bad stuff.

For now, it's highly unlikely.
