I'm bored, so ponder with me if you will. In a couple of years when Manchester United's manager retires, who do you think would be a good and/or likely replacement for him?

I for one think the fans would reject any non-British manager, as they tend to respond very poorly (but then put up with) foreign investment.

I.E. they are quite opposite then my favourites Chelsea.

Eh?

The rumor was about a year ago that Roy Keane would be his successor.
But after the way he was sacked by Sunderland I don't know if that assesment is still valid.

And around 2006, when the first speculation began, it was reported that Marcello Lippi was the choice of United's owners.

He wasn't sacked; he resigned.

Keane is like SAF in many ways, I would think him a good match.

Remember back in 2002, when Sir Alex was poised to finally step down as manager? George Burley, then manager of Ipswich Town was rumoured to be Manchester United's number one target. How the times have changed! I didn't even know he was still managing, albeit Scotland.

If anybody is to replace Sir Alex, whenever he does decide to step down I'd dare say it would be the incumbent manager of Ipswich Town Roy Keane, regardless of the handling of his resignation at Sunderland. If Glasgow Celtic were after him, I'd dare say Manchester United would be after him too (was that the worst analogy I could have possibly made?).

Back in 2002, the board were looking to appoint Sven, as Michael Crick of the BBC said in a now famous(or is it infamous?)documentary, which-along with other things mentioned in it- lead to Ferguson's boycott of the BBC. The same Sven who was on his way to the World Cup was still under contract to the FA-just as he was a few years later when Abramovich wanted him at Chelsea to replace Ranieri....

I can't help thinking that United ended up with the better part of the deal....As to who will replace? A few years ago I would have said O'Neill. Ottmar Hitzfeld was also being eyed for it. But I can't help thinking it will be the man who is under contract elsewhere to 2012, which is when SAF will probably go; and this man wants the job... Jose Mourinho.

It is quite clear by now that Fergie will only ever leave Old Trafford in a box so all this talk is mute.

Ha ha ha....could be closer to the truth than we think. And no, don't mean it in a Jock Stein way, like some Liverpool fan(clearly hopefully)suggested to me recently... SAF has had as many farewell tours as Sinatra. Long may it continue
