How do you see it playing out? From what I understand, it will be held in May with a jungle primary system. Is it possible a Democrat could take the seat? Who will Perry appoint as the temporary replacement?

I'm going with whoever the GOP appointee (Dewhurst perhaps?) is vs. Bill White in a runoff.

He'll appoint George W. Bush as the temporary replacement.

I'm thinking Joe Barton runs against Bill White. The Texas railroad Commission Chairman Michael Williams has announced a run, if elected he will be the Black Republican ever elected to the Senate.

Hiram Revels and Blanche Bruce were also elected to the senate, albeit by their state legislatures before the Constitution mandated popular elections of senators.

Joe Barton is getting nowhere near that seat.  It'll either be who Perry appoints or some other statewide officer.

I think that the "Republican" is unnecessary.

I see your point, but democrats won't win a statewide office for years. A black democrat will not be elected to a statewide office in Texas, period (at least not for a long time). In 2002 Ron Kirk was the very popular mayor of Dallas, while Cornyn was a barely known attorney general, and Kirk got beaten by 12 points.
