In times like these, it's terribly difficult to be optimistic. Every day seems to bring new sources of economic horror; we are inundated by a profound pessimism that rejects not only the traditional moorings of the past, but all hope for the future as well. Partially this can be blamed on those who have promised much and done little, and partially this can be blamed on those who would like to see society returned to the previous and passing era, the age of mass industrial capitalism on an impersonal level.
But those days are over.
One new technology is already transforming the world:
This is our new economy, folks. This here, so far in its infancy stages,
will one day grow up to become what the factory was for our parents and grandparents. Like the last crisis, technology will save us - perhaps not immediately; such things require time to mature, and it would be hasty to try to implement immature technologies too rapidly. We may see ourselves in this mire for ten years or more. But, I assure you, this technology, and others like it - which combine the principles of liberty
and justice - will create the foundations for a new economy to come.
