Would it be Trent Lott, Jon Huntsman, or Strom Thurmond (if he was still alive)?

Out of the candidates that have been mentioned, i'd say Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich or Jeb Bush.

Huntsman would be a really strong nominee, but already dropped out, as he accepted nomination for Ambassador in potential rival administration. Maybe in 2016, but as Governor he would be stronger.

Lott of course would get destroyed Cheesy

Obama...

It wouldn't be much of a choice amongst the two major parties.

Then again, there is little difference now, anyway.

I have called Trent Lott "Ayatol-Lott" for his authoritarian tendencies. He could win election in few places other than Mississippi because of the pathological practices of voters in Mississippi. Voters split very neatly on racial lines, and wherever whites are in the majority, no black can win and vice-versa. Lott can win statewide election despite losing 95% of the black vote because he can win 80% of the white vote. In Mississippi, the Republican Party is effectively the White People's Party and the Democratic Party is effectively the Black People's Party, and such ensures corrupt machine politics even in small towns. The state has one of the highest levels of political corruption in America if measured in (former) elected officials convicted of crimes committed in office -- typically bribery, extortion, and misappropriation of funds.

Outside of Mississippi and Alabama, American politics does not so operate.

Barack Obama is one shrewd politician, and I think that he chose Jon Huntsman for an Ambassadorship to China (an assignment of extreme difficulty) with the knowledge that Huntsman would be a solid candidate for President as a Republican in 2016 if he so chose to run.

Of the likely possibilities discussed, Sarah Palin -while Mike Huckabee wouldn't do that much better, at least he can't be accused of being a lightweight and a quitter.

Why even mention Lott or the decaying Thurmond?  Or were you trying to project a certain type of candidate?  Because Haley Barbour, Jeff Sessions or James Inhofe would fit that bill, too.

Of the candidates that have been seriously mentioned, I think Sarah Palin would easily be the Republican candidate most likely to make a complete fool of herself and her party in a Presidential election.  This is one, of many, reasons I am confident primary Republicans will not entertain the thought of putting her on a national ticket again.

Oh Jesus (excuse my use of your lord's name in vain JSojourner), I completely forgot about that guy. But he'd be in his late 70's by the time of 2012. Coburn would be a safer choice for the crazies.

No offense taken.  :-)

What I was trying to do is figure out if the OP just had a hard on for southern bigots and/or dumbs.

Leaving out Ensign, Sanford and any other transgressors:

Cheney if he was a "candidate".

Barbour strikes me as one of the worst.

Palin (at least for now)
