Iraq's first new oilfields in 30 years has just started pumping oil, and it's in Iraqi Kurdistan. One of the fields was developed in collaboration between the Kurdistan Regional Government a Turkish company and the oil is being exported via a pipeline through Turkey.

Since the imposition of the no-fly zone in the early 90's, Kurdistan has had de-facto independence, and after a largely pointless, provincal civil-war in the late 90's, Kurdistan has been ahead of much of Iraq in most terms, and are largely seperate from it in many ways.

Can an increasingly independent, wealthy, proud Kurdish enclave persist in the region?

It's already doing so. The referendum on aligning the regions de jure boundary with its (post Saddam's fall) de facto boundary - and the approximate ethnic boundary - is getting postponed and postponed. I wonder how long Kurdish patience will hold.
