It will be the first time that any two Presidents have served out two full terms back to back since when?

Since 1825, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe all of the Democratic-Republican party each served two consecutive terms back to back.

That feat has never been repeated. The closest was when Truman served ALMOST two full terms preceding the Eisenhower Presidency.

Interesting point. I'm glad you brought it up Smiley

What about Lincoln and Grant? True, Lincoln was killed, but he WAS elected to the second term. In essence, Johnson's term was truly Lincoln's, the Congress reminded him of that too Wink  Then Grant, of course, was elected to two terms.

I think it's safe to conclude that, if not for Watergate, Nixon and Reagan would have accomplished this feat.  Bush 41 may have been able to follow with a third double term, if you assume Clinton would not have run until 92.  But, of course, then we would have missed out on the magical Ford/Carer years.

Johnson didn't serve two terms though. So even if Nixon didn't resign, there would not have been two Presidents serving a full 2 terms right next to each other.

Definitely but Beets question was "It will be the first time that any two Presidents have served out two full terms back to back since when? "

Thats what I answered Smiley

If not for Watergate the moderate Republicans would have been even more powerful than they were; and in reality they were strong enough to nominate Ford over Reagan. So Spiro Agnew probably would have been nominated in '76 without Watergate, but he probably would have lost due to lingering discontent over the economic crisis caused by the first Oil Embargo. So no, we wouldn't have missed those "magical" years... and Reagan's supply side policies would not have saved America's economy from the Iranian revolution and oil spike in '79. In essence they amounted to deficit spending which is a standard Keynesian expansionary policy tried by both Ford and Carter. In the long run it was Paul Volcker, combined with falling oil prices, that enabled the end of stagflation.

I don't think Agnew would have been nominated in 76 if Nixon did not resign, as Agnew had resigned prior to Watergate due to person Income Tax inproprieties.  Good point about the mod Reps growing more powerful if no Watergate though.

The Vice-Presidential Record is even worse, by the way.  The only Vice Presidents to serve out a full 8 years in office:

John Adams (1789-1797)
Daniel D. Tompkins (1817-1825)
Thomas Marshall (1913-1921)
Jack Garner (1933-1941)
Richard Nixon (1953-1961)
George Bush (1981-1989)
Al Gore (1993-2001)
Dick Cheney (2001-2009)

Which makes Gore-Cheney the first set of VPs to serve 8 consecutive years back to back.

Could Biden make it an unprecedented streak of three?  We'll see.

[Other VP's were elected to a 2nd term, but didn't make it all the way through:
George Clinton, 1805-1812, died
John Calhoun, 1825-1832, resigned
Spiro Agnew, 1969-1973, resigned]
