Ok...Lets' say that both John McCain and Dubya decide against running for the Presidency, this lead to a large swell of Republican Candidates. Throughout a rough Primary season, former Ambassador and staunch conservative Alan Keyes clinches the nomination. For a symbol of party unity, Keyes chooses Moderate Governer John Engler of Michigan as his running Mate. Butterflies on the Democratic side, have Al Gore choose the 1st term Senator John Edwards of North Carolina as his running mate, to keep the Southern Strategy alive. How does the electoral picture turn out?

Keyes would get crushed. Not only is he not a good campaigner, but he is farther right than most Republicans. African-Americans would not rush to him the same way they did with Obama. Meanwhile, the choice of John Edwards would only increase electoral chance in Republican states, while Democratic ones remained virtually safe.

Yeah it'd be a washout, Gore/Edwards would probably break the 400 Electoral Vote barrier, something Clinton was never able to do.

Albert Gore Jr./John Edwards: 406 Electoral Votes
Alan Keyes/John Engler: 132 Electoral Votes
