Despite losing the popular vote, Bob Dornan wins the electoral vote due to a bunch of narrow victories in the Battleground states. Though rather unpopular in his first year, Dornan goes on to become a rather good president. Pat Buchanan wins the nomination in 2004, but loses narrowly to Arlen Specter.

I'm really very kind to Dornan with map below.

And I'm not so sure about at least such Deep South as South Carolina, as well as Indiana, due to African-American population, who would be, not unreasonably, scared with Dornan/Buchanan ticket.
