Let say after Lincoln assassination a new constitutional amendment has been passed.

Presidents serves four-year term, but in case of vacancy the Vice President shall assume office but only until a special election to fill the Presidency for the rest of term.

How about this scenario?

I agree on Blaine (which means Arthur is President just for few months).

I not so sure about Teddy Roosevelt, succeeding and the denied nomination.

Anyway, this is my expanded guess, that constitution provided special election since very begining:

1841 special election: Henry Clay (W-KY) (already groomed as Harrison successor, should not have a troble by denying nomination to now President Tyler, who never was considered for this role in first place)

1850: Incumbent Fillmore. He became vunerable only after singing Runaway Slaves Law

1865: Hm, the hard one. Don't think Johnson, who in the case would be just a placeholder. Maybe Fremont, Chase even ressurected Hamlin? I don't think Grant would run so quicky

1881: Blaine (R-ME)

1901: Roosevelt (inc.) (R-NY)

1923: Coolidge (inc.) (R-MA)

1945: Truman (inc.) (D-MO) thanks to sympathy votes after FDR death, but agree that more narrowly

1964: Johnson (inc.) (D-TX) by one landslide (probably not very contestet race) and then regularry by antoher landslide of November as IOTL

1974: Not Ford, I won't be suprise he chose to not run. Right after Watergate Democratic victory more than assured. Kennedy, Jackson, Chruch even ressurected Humphrey.

Early election kills Carter aspiration, as he did not yet rise

I think the Republican establishment would never permit Roosevelt to get nominated. I'm not sure for Taft, but another establishment conservative would be a better successor for McKinley.

You right, because Roosevelt has been nominated for V.P. to "bury him alive", as Platt desired. He need few years to made his position.

Maybe ol' Mark Hanna would be a candidate. Ughhh...
