Version: 5 McCain, after becoming the new frontrunner, soars to victory in the Republican contest. Version: 1 Romney loses to Huckabee in Iowa and McCain in New Hampshire, causing him to lurch downward. This was followed by an embarrassing loss in Michigan to Huckabee, and a win in Wyoming. Huckabee narrowly wins Florida, which brings bad news to Giuliani as well as Romney. Romney continues to do badly, while Giuliani does better. Around mid-February, Romney withdraws and McCain takes up some of his western vote. Huckabee does well in the South, and there could become a dangerous fight at the convention.
