i think it could happen cause the people are tired of washington and the taxes and the oil being spilled

 By: KS21 (I-KS) 2010-06-14 @ 17:54:23 prediction Map
Which is why we need less people chanting "Drill, Baby, Drill" like you're favorite politician, Sister Sarah...

i think sarah is right

We don't need oil.

We need

wind.

solar.

water.

By: CR (--MO) 2010-06-14 @ 20:42:52 prediction Map
Wind, solar, and water are fine to add to the power grid but they'll never be serious alternative replacements. If they were, the technology would be more advanced than we have today. They can be great additions but we must have oil. It is the very foundation of modern civilization and we'd be fools to give it up. A diversified grid is just fine but there is no question we can't survive without oil, gas, and coal.

Then we need to cut back until we can.

By: CR (--MO) 2010-06-14 @ 21:50:16 prediction Map
But they'll never be the complete answer. Look around our society today. Plastics, polymers, synthetics, pharmaceuticals, resins, many of the components in your computer - all rely on hydrocarbons which we obtain from petroleum products. Wind, water, and solar can't replace that. We need those things. Not to mention that gas is the only reliable source of power for automobiles and this is a society that requires automotive transportation.

Right now we need oil and we'll need it well into the future or our society will be unable to function.

Well this oil spill has definetly made me rethink my thoughts on "Drill baby Drill".
There has to be another way. The amount of wildlife lost or compromised as a result of this spill has been monumental. The images are disturbing and sad. The cost to the local economy and the gulf eco system that will never be the same for many many years. There has to be another way, we cant keep taking these risks to the ecosystem and natural wildlife. If it happened there it can happen anywhere and have the same devastating effects

 By: dnul222 (D-MN) 2010-06-15 @ 17:36:26 prediction Map
we will need some oil forever as it will be essential for too many things in our lifetimes..which for others is longer than mine.

But we should even have clean coal not to mention gas, wind, thermal and whatever...

I like nuclear!

By: CR (--MO) 2010-06-15 @ 20:48:27 prediction Map
But there are always going to be risks. People complain that wind farms kill birds, and they do. Hydroelectric damages rivers and hurts fish. I'm sorry but we have very few options. I would like to point out that this disaster in the Gulf is bad and it has been made much worse by the share and utter lack of federal response. We must have power and keep in mind that while this is bad, its also a learning experience. We can take the lessons from BP and make sure that new deep water rigs are safer. No way to ever completely remove risk but can work to improve it.

dnul is completely right. We need a diversified energy grid. Wind, water, and solar are great where they can be added. They can take some of the load. But the national grid must run on those things proven reliable - oil, gas, coal, and nuclear power. Nuclear power alone could support a majority of our national needs with coal filling in the rest. Then oil would go to making synthetics and fueling transportation.

The best alternative in my view is something I like to call carbon recycling. In a nutshell, we burn fossil fuels and capture roughly 80% of the emissions. These can then be used to grow green algae in tanks because carbon dioxide and water are readily available from the combustion process. That algae can then be used to make plastics, polymers, etc. And one day - synthetic oil. But that is a ways off and in the mean time we must do what we can with what we have.
