Election Notes:
  • The published data on this election (for all statewide offices) is an absolute mess. The 1901 Legislative Manual only gives the county figures for Adams, Allen, and Bailey, with the rest included under "Scattering". Except for Bailey, none of the county figures add up to the reported totals and the stated totals in the Manual for Adams and Bailey are wrong. The totals as canvassed by the General Assembly were reported in various newspapers in January 1897. The totals here are the ones reported in the 1/12/1897 Rocky Mountain News (of Denver). The county figures for Waite are sourced from the 1897 Tribune Almanac, which also gives (different) figures for Adams and Allen. The 1897 Tribune Almanac only gives a total for Bailey and it's actually the correct one, but does not list his county by county figures. Ultimately, the original manuscript returns would be needed to fully reconcile the problems. Some figures can be found for all candidates from various newspapers that published their counties' respective returns throughout November 1896.
