Election Notes: Note that prior to the ratification of Amendment XII to the Constitution in 1804, each Elector
cast two votes for President (instead of one vote for President and one vote for Vice President).
The candidate receiving the most votes became President and the candidate receiving the second most votes became Vice President.
(see Article II Section 1 for details).
George Washington received one vote from each elector (that cast a ballot). The map above
shows the unanimous decision. The New York legislature failed to appoint its
allotted 8 Electors in time. Two Electors from Maryland did not vote. One Elector from Virginia did
not vote and one Elector was not chosen because an election district failed to submit returns.
Note: there is no implied geographical significance as to the location of the shaded areas in states with split
electoral votes. |
