Thurston County is a county in eastern Nebraska, on the Iowa border. It is notable for being the only county in the state of Nebraska to vote for Democrat John F. Kerry in the 2004 Presidential election.

Kerry received 51% of the vote in 2004, comprable to the 52% of the population that the Census identifies as being of Native American descent. It is likely that the flip between 2000 and 2004 was due to increased Native American turnout.

Over a quarter of the population of Thurston County lives under the poverty level, including just short of a third of children.
