Shannon County is a county in South Dakota with a Native American hypermajority. Wounded Knee is located within this county. It is notable for being the strongest county for Democrat John F. Kerry in the 2004 Presidential election outside of Washington, D.C. It is part of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservaation.

Shannon County is 94% Native American and 5% White, making for the highest Native American population percentage and lowest white percentage of any county in the country. Shannon County's per capita income of $6,286 makes it the second poorest county in the country, behind Buffalo County, South Dakota.
