I think SF could beat them!  of course that wouldn't be until the title game.  who beats them in the opening round?  Detroit?  EDIT: I guess NO would be the best bet in many minds but their defense sucks and do you really like Brees in the subzero?

A lot of that comes from the way that teams have just stopped trying to run the ball against the 49ers; naturally, if they're throwing every down, they'll get more yards that way. The 49ers are the ninth-best team in the league in yards per pass attempt. I wouldn't worry about that.

I was looking at passing yards per game, which would naturally be driven up by the inability of teams to run against us. We've also beaten the no. 4 (NYG) & 5 (DET) passing teams in the NFL, before either of them imploded. Actually, the Raiders have a pretty strong pass defense now that I look at the stats.

Sidenote: no team that the Packers face in their regular-season schedule has allowed an average of less than 20 points per game. Niners have allowed 13.4 points per game.

I wanted to see how the 49ers' defense compares to the 2000 Ravens, so I looked it up. That team gave up 10.5 points a game. How?

Median PF/g today is about 22.5 compared to just over 20 back then. It seems like offenses produced less back then.

Definitely related to rules favoring the offense.

I don't see anybody beating the Packers in Green Bay, especially not in Jan and ESPECIALLY not a fair weather team.  The AFC champ will be the one to do the knocking off if there is going to be any knocking off.

Question about the NFL:

Does anyone know why the NFL does not have promoted teams or relegated teams after each season like in football leagues ?

It seems the NFL consists of all the same teams each year. Any reason for that ?
For some reason the method you describe never caught on here.  Personally I love that sytem and wish every league did it that way and every city of any size had frranchises in all the important sports.  It would make things interesting.

It looks like the 49ers have just decided as a team that they're not interested in making an effort to score touchdowns.

Who would be promoted? There are no other teams; the only other significant football competition belongs the NCAA, and its teams are amateur, not professional. Occasionally new teams will be created (the last was the Houston Texans in 2003), but there are no plans for any further expansion. The last team to be removed from the league was the Dallas Texans (no relation to the current Houston team), who were folded in 1952.

I just find it strange that exactly the US, the country of competition, does not have such a system while the "Socialist" Europe does have it ... Tongue

America lets the winner's win and play football.
Europe rotates losers in so their feelings don't get hurt.

In Europe, if you don't like your league, you can force the sport's governing body to let you into the top league. In America, you have to start your own league, and if it's good enough (like the AFL) it can succeed.

Much like how in America large corporations aren't really subject to the law.

Such a great football day.

Texans clinch playoff spot and division title, with game-winning drive by third-string QB, who honestly looks about as good as our former starter.

Cowboys completely choke 12-point lead in last 6 minutes, and let their kicker get iced again.

Beautiful.  Nothing more to say.

Niners lost, but at least we got to buff our beastly rushing defense stats. Also the Cardinals' Cinderella story this season is pretty impressive. Imagine the reaction if the Cardinals won the Super Bowl.

John Skelton is so bad. It looks like all the 49ers are trying to do is have David Akers set the single-season field goal record (which he'll shatter, since he only needs four more to tie).

He's also going to shatter the franchise record for points in a season. Most likely break the NFL record too.

haha wow.  I shut the game off after the Romo bomb TD with 6 to play.  this is bad for the Jets, I was hoping for an essentially eliminated 6-8 Giants team with a lame duck Coughlin on Christmas Eve... instead it's going to have to be more interesting than that.  this will easily be the most interesting Jet-Giant game of my lifetime.

Dallas played alright for the most part last night, but our defense was non-existent in the clutch.  I feared once Dallas scored that 50-yard touchdown with 5:00 to go we may have scored too soon.  I knew Eli Manning was one of the best at engineering clutch touchdown drives and he did just that.  Dallas could have sealed the deal, though, if Miles Austin had caught that pass with the Cowboys up 34-29 just before the 2 minute warning.  That would have given the Cowboys a first down and would have really put New York in deep trouble with only one timeout remaining.  This game was not lost due to Tony Romo or to Felix Jones (although his fumble deep in his own end proved to be the difference).  This loss belongs to the defense.  We were gashed, we kept blitzing which opened up huge passing lanes for Eli Manning and Mario Manningham and Hakeem Nicks.  Now, New York gets to go home and face Washington, then "visit" the Jets, then host the Cowboys.  They get to spend the last three weeks at their home stadium.  Certainly no gimmies for the Giants. Washington has been playing rather well of late almost beating the Patriots yesterday.  The  Jets are getting warm and the Cowboys are still going to be tough.  The Cowboys meanwhile have to visit Tampa Bay, come home for Philly, and go visit the G-men.  Tampa Bay should be a win, Philadelphia should be as well, but it is a rivalry where records get tossed out the window and they will go in fiery mad to New York.  If Dallas can go to New York at 9-6 and New York can win just once the next two weeks and welcome Dallas with a record of 8-7, then the final game of the season will determine the division.  The onus right now is on the Cowboys.  They pretty much face must wins the rest of the season.  The Giants, by virtue of their win last night, only need to win 2 of their last 3.

He needs three more points to pass Jerry Rice, but he won't beat LaDainian Tomlinson's all-time record. He's still 50 points away from that. LaDainian Tomlinson's 2006 was unreal.

Wow, I didn't realize the NFL record was that huge. I just assumed it was some reasonably small number bigger, especially since Jerry Rice was the one who set the franchise record. Who expects to outperform Jerry Rice? Tongue
