There is no reason this name should have existed for the last 50 years.

Here's some good food for thought:

Speaking of food for thought, I support the potato mascot idea.

Simply calling them Indians as they prefer themselves to be described would create confusion, and in the UK Red Indians are easily identifiable through the name.

Uhh... when have you surveyed native Americans and reached this conclusion they prefer to be called something they most definitely are not?  Stay in England or Germany or where ever you live.  You will offend way to many people here in the United States.

And furthermore the term "Real American" sounds hardly intellectual.

You are not a good arbiter of what sounds "intellectual."  At least Real American is accurate unlike that offensive Indian stuff you keep posting.

Who are the Native Americans you've talked to who are offended at the name "Indian" or call themselves "Real Americans"?

Ex girlfriend.  Any other questions?  And the term the gentleman used was "Red Indian."

Yes, my next question is what nation is your ex-girlfriend from?  I ask because it is very different from those I've met in my own experience.

Shua, be straight up.  You do not call Native American's "Red Indians."

No, but you said that they most definitely do not prefer to be called "Indians." Most I've met do call themselves "Indians" or at least don't have any problem with it, and don't use the term "Real Americans" to contrast themselves with other people.

The Washington football team really is offensive in a way that other Native American names, or names of any other ethnicity, aren't.  It's in a class by itself.

How is Redskin any more offensive a term than White, Black, Brown, or Yellow?  I just don't see it being anywhere near the level of n that some opponents of the term would argue it is.  About the only thing beyond beyond "it's offensive because it's offensive" that I've seen opponents of the name bring up is that the term has connotations of savage warriors.  I never realized that American football is such a gentle and peaceful game that any association with savagery or fighting should be shunned.  Now, if the particular depiction of redskins by the Redskins were offensive, then there certainly would be a problem.  But unless one is going to argue for a ban on all team names based on ethnic identity, I just can't see this as being needful.

You're right, it's no more offensive than if the team were called the Washington Yellows and they had a mascot with a sedge hat. Tongue

How long until the SJW's start demanding we change the capitals name since the name Washington is also offensive to minorities.

United Empire Loyalists are unfortunately neglected by SJWs.

If anything it's the DC part that's offensive to minorities. Colombia. The capital is named after Christopher Columbus, a far more offensive name.

actually the name of Colombia's capital district is of Muisca derivation. Tongue
