so, no word yet from Jerry Falwell relating these tragic events to lack of Christianity in Japan?!

As I recall, some conservative Japanese politician made remarks about how the decline in traditional Japanese values was responsible, but I forget exactly who, and I can't find the exact quote.

A Korean megachurch preacher claimed that the disaster happened because the Japanese are non-Christian and are secular.

Glenn Beck also made some inconsiderate remarks, I believe.

Ah yes, he did:

Such ignorance Tornado Alley and the Bible Belt overlap considerably. By far the most tornado prone area on the planet. They never bring that up though. Maybe it isn't a coincidence?

Christianity didn't spare Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas the wrath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, to cite just one very well-known recent example.

True, but at the time there were also people saying it struck New Orleans due to Voodoo.

We now have a confirmed partial meltdown in the 2nd reactor and the strong possibility of one in the 3rd reactor.  I'm surprised noone seems to care about this anymore.

I care, I just don't care about the forum discussion anymore.
Besides, they're just confirming what I've more-or-less-known for two weeks.

CNN Breaking News:

Japanese nuclear agency "provisionally" raises the threat level from a stricken power plant from 5 to 7, the most severe category.

The 1986 Chernobyl accident in the former Soviet Union also rated a 7 on the International Nuclear Events Scale, which equates to a "major release of radioactive material with widespread health and environmental effects requiring implementation of planned and extended countermeasures."

A Japanese official says the release of radiation at the Fukushima Daiichi plant is about 10% of what was emitted at Chernobyl.

And in other news, the Japanese Imperial Navy admitted that the Battle of Midway didn't go quite as well as expected.  Roll Eyes

It was obvious that it was a lot worse than TMI.

Apparently, the rating increase is pretty much bogus and simply Japan's way of showing that they're taking it seriously. Each individual reactor is on a 5-level but they're counting at 7 because there are so many.

The panic over this has really reached bizarre levels.

Ever since the containment breach at reactor 2 was announced, it was fairly obvious that it was a level 6 all by itself.  However, it is not obvious that this is significantly worse than Kyshtym (which is the sole level 6 incident officially) and it obvious that it is not as bad as Chernobyl.  I wouldn't be surprised if this provisional level 7 is later reduced to a final level 6. (Or that the INES is revised to place Chernobyl on a new level 8.)
