Incredibly pretentious, but also intelligent enough to be forgiven. FF.

It doesn't surprise me that he's popular among the people who miss opebo.

You need to look at that list again, hombre.

I miss opebo but find "Meursault" completely insufferable.

Whereas I enjoy Mersault's contributions (not that I agree with them of course but they add to the Forum) but didn't care for opebo.  I don't think your expected correlation actually holds, Nix.

Maybe it's worth distinguishing between those who enjoyed opebo's charisma and those who were more interested in the wake of chaos that seemed to follow him around the forum.

I don't think there's really a difference between those two things.

Opebo was a better writer - I never pictured him pawing through a thesaurus or looking up key terms on Wikipedia to give his posts a veneer of thoughtfulness and knowledgeability, which is how Ziggy posts come across. I don't see wisdom or insight, just anger and an act that aims to provoke.

I feel like his affectations are actually quite genuine, if that makes any sense.  Perhaps I have a higher tolerance for academic-ese than most folks here.

I doubt it. Your tolerance probably closer to the forum consensus than my distaste for it.

I don't think you appreciate quite how high my tolerance actually is.  Guess I don't really ever let it show fully, out of embarrassment.  Regardless, it pretty completely explains our difference of opinion regarding Mr. Mersault, I think.

You know, there is a degree of pretentiousness with the poster in question, but underneath it I see a willingness to call a spade a spade. I really ultimately respect that, even if he's trying too hard to be academic or international or whatever.

My tolerance is probably equally high, and I don't like Einzige and think he's pretentious as all get-out, but it may be that because I understand and vehemently disagree with most of the content of what he's saying the airs he puts on in order to communicate it are thrown into sharper relief

In my own defense, I've (A) never attended a college course in my life, so I'm certainly no traditional academic, but (B) I also don't "paw through" reference books to embellish my posts. And, also, I'm disingenuous probably forty percent of the time.

I also don't mind accusations of pretentiousness. I know I am, I make no attempt to hide it, and I have fun with it. If modern society is almost defined by its unassuming, dressed-down casualness, and one dislikes modern society, then being pretentious is the only alternative.

He seems like the type of guy that would find the "dark enlightenment" dweebs intellectually intriguing: http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Neoreactionary_movement

?

That kinda sounds like the sort of association he might randomly come up with about someone, like when he assumed that anyone who wasn't up in arms about the history of Israelis spying on American leaders is some kind of right-wing jingoistic 'murican patriot.  But at least you said "he seems."

oh, ok, I can kinda see that now.
